When returning clients approached us to design the bathroom in their second property, we already had a strong understanding of their lifestyle and design preferences. Having worked extensively with them previously, the brief this time was refreshingly simple: create a functional family bathroom that would work effortlessly for everyday life.

Located in New Milton, the property needed a bathroom that could handle the demands of family living while maintaining a contemporary, calm aesthetic. With children to consider, practicality and storage were key priorities, alongside durable materials that would stand up to daily use.

Our design solution focused on reorganising the existing layout to create clearer zones for bathing, showering, and storage. One of the biggest improvements came from constructing an additional wall to form a dedicated enclosure for a large walk-in shower. This allowed the space to feel more structured while also improving practicality for busy family routines.

The shower itself was designed with flexibility in mind. An overhead rainfall shower provides a luxurious experience for adults, while a handheld shower attachment makes it far easier to wash younger children or rinse down the shower area when needed. A low-level stone shower tray keeps the entry point accessible and comfortable while maintaining a sleek, modern appearance.

For the bath area, we installed a back-to-wall freestanding bath, combining the elegant look of a freestanding bath with the practicality of easier cleaning — a particularly important detail in a family home. The surrounding layout allows enough space for children’s bath time while keeping the room feeling uncluttered.

Storage was carefully integrated throughout the design. A worktop with an incorporated basin provides useful surface space while maintaining a clean, contemporary look. Additional cabinetry includes a tall storage unit, perfect for towels, toiletries, and everyday essentials. By planning storage properly, the bathroom remains tidy even with children’s bath toys and products in regular use.

Visually, the bathroom combines modern finishes with subtle texture and character. Terrazzo tiles sourced from Mandarin Stone introduce a playful yet sophisticated pattern, while black brassware provides a bold contrast that elevates the overall design. Half-height tiling keeps the space feeling bright and open, while still protecting walls in high-use areas.

To deliver the project, we began by completely stripping out the existing bathroom. A new stud wall was constructed to form the shower enclosure, and a low-level stone shower tray was installed to anchor the new layout. Plumbing and drainage were reconfigured to suit the redesigned space, ensuring reliable performance for both the bath and shower.

We also installed new electrical features throughout the room, including a lit demisting mirror, discreetly concealed shaver point within the cabinetry, modern ceiling spotlights, and an extractor fan for effective ventilation. Within the shower enclosure, a lit tiled niche was built into the wall, creating a dedicated space for shampoo and toiletries while keeping the shower tray clutter-free.

The result is a contemporary family bathroom that balances style with everyday practicality. With clearly defined zones, generous storage, and durable finishes, the space works effortlessly for family life while still feeling calm, modern, and enjoyable to use.
