After successfully completing a bathroom renovation for our client, she invited us back to take on a much larger transformation — designing, installing, and project managing a brand-new open-plan kitchen, utility, dining, and living space. As a busy professional working from home, she wanted a calm, uncluttered environment that felt safe, welcoming, and practical for both herself and her two much-loved West Highland Terriers.

The brief centred around creating an open, free-flowing layout that would become the true hub of the home. The existing configuration felt restrictive and disconnected, so we proposed a rear door extension to unlock the space required for modern open-plan living. The kitchen needed to feel cohesive with the living area, rather than a separate functional zone, while clever storage solutions would ensure surfaces remained clean and uncluttered. A separate utility room was also essential — particularly for pet care and post-dog-walk clean-ups — keeping mess away from the main living space.

Our design solution delivered a beautifully balanced layout that combines practicality with refined style. Along the back wall, tall tower units were installed to maximise vertical storage while seamlessly integrating the fridge freezer and a generous larder unit. This kept the overall aesthetic streamlined and clutter-free. A quartz worktop was carefully selected in person, ensuring the delicate gold veining would be perfectly positioned and not lost within sink or hob cut-outs — a small detail that elevates the entire kitchen.

A peninsular island with seating provides additional storage and acts as a subtle divider between kitchen and living areas, while still maintaining the open-plan feel. An induction hob with a downdraft extractor was chosen to avoid overhead extraction, with ducting neatly laid within the floor for a clean, uninterrupted sightline across the space. An integrated dishwasher further supports the seamless finish.

To complement her working lifestyle, we incorporated muted, layered lighting, creating a softer atmosphere ideal for someone who spends long hours in front of a screen. The result is a space that transitions effortlessly from productive daytime working to relaxed evening living.

The utility room was designed with equal care. Finished with terrazzo tiling and paired with dove grey units, it provides a dedicated area for laundry, pet washing, and pan cleaning. Access from the side door means muddy paws and wet coats can be dealt with before entering the main living space — a practical solution that keeps the heart of the home spotless.

In the main living area, herringbone flooring flows throughout, enhancing continuity and warmth. A bespoke built-in media unit was created with mitre-edge tiling for a seamless, architectural finish. Textured wood-effect tiles add depth and warmth, ensuring the space feels inviting and grounded.

The result is a truly unique home tailored to our client’s lifestyle. She can now step in from dog walks directly into the utility area, keeping mud at bay, before moving into a stylish yet calming open-plan kitchen and living space. It’s a design that feels luxurious, practical, and entirely personal — a home that works beautifully in every way.
