When our retired clients in Barton on Sea approached us, they were facing a significant decision: should they move home to find a property that better suited their needs, or invest in improving the home they already loved? Their existing kitchen was located within a large extended room, but despite the generous footprint, it felt surprisingly dark and lacked the practicality they needed for day-to-day living.

Their brief was to create a brighter, more functional kitchen and utility space that felt connected visually while allowing each area to retain its own purpose. The design also needed to consider accessibility, ensuring the kitchen would continue to work comfortably for years to come.

After discussing how they used the space and what improvements would make the biggest difference, we recommended a light shaker-style kitchen that would complement the character of the property while helping to reflect more natural light throughout the room. By selecting a lighter door colour, we were able to instantly brighten the overall feel of the space and create a much more welcoming environment.

Practicality was at the heart of the design. The layout was carefully planned to provide generous worktop space and improve the flow between the kitchen and utility areas. We incorporated two fully functional sink areas, allowing both rooms to work independently when needed while maintaining a cohesive appearance. A ceramic kitchen sink was chosen to add a touch of luxury and reinforce the timeless feel of the shaker kitchen design.

Accessibility was another key consideration throughout the project. To make everyday tasks easier, we introduced additional drawer storage and easier-to-reach cupboards, particularly within the utility room. We also replaced the existing range cooker with a tower oven arrangement, reducing the need to bend down and making cooking more comfortable and convenient.

Delivering the transformation required a complete strip-out of the existing kitchen. We carefully removed the old units and appliances, storing selected appliances that the clients wished to reuse. Once the room had been cleared, we organised new plumbing and drainage works to support the revised layout, ensuring both sink areas functioned efficiently.

The electrical installation was also improved, with sockets repositioned to better suit the new design and access to electrical services upgraded for future maintenance and convenience. With the groundwork complete, we installed the new kitchen and utility units, creating a seamless visual connection between the two spaces.

The final stage involved cutting and joining the laminate worktops to perfectly suit the room, ensuring a clean, professional finish that complements the shaker cabinetry and provides durable surfaces for everyday use.

The result is a beautifully transformed kitchen and utility installation in Barton on Sea that feels brighter, more spacious, and far more practical than before. The two spaces now work together harmoniously while still serving their individual functions, providing improved storage, easier access, and generous preparation areas.
