When we first walked into this kitchen in Friars Cliff, much of the decision-making had already happened. The kitchen and utility room had been designed, the cabinetry had been ordered and delivered, some plastering had been completed, and plumbing and electrical work were already underway.

But the circumstances surrounding the project had changed enormously.

Our client had planned the renovation with her late husband, an engineer with a meticulous eye for detail. They had intended to undertake much of the work themselves, but sadly he passed away before they had the opportunity to complete it.

We were being asked to pick up the project partway through, so our first job wasn’t to start changing things. It was to understand what had already been planned.

There were drawings and, of course, all the cabinetry waiting to be installed. But not every intention had been written down, and there were details that could only really be resolved once we started working through the rooms. It called for a slightly different kind of kitchen installation, where listening, looking and occasionally thinking sideways mattered just as much as following the plan.

With a kitchen that’s already been ordered, many of the usual decisions have effectively been made. Cabinet sizes are fixed, door configurations have been chosen and appliances have their places. Our role was to work carefully with those decisions and resolve the practical details as the installation progressed.

One of the first areas we looked at was the plumbing. Some of the existing arrangements were reorganised to provide better runs and drainage for the new kitchen. As the cabinetry started going into position, we could also see exactly how the design translated from drawing to room.

Once everything was correctly installed, the quartz worktops could be templated to the kitchen as it actually stood. It’s one of the reasons accuracy at this stage matters. The plan gives us the design, but the installation establishes the finished positions from which those final elements are made.

A plan can be extremely detailed, but the physical room always has the final word.

The sink run looks particularly calm in the finished kitchen. A generous bowl-and-a-half Franke sink sits beneath the wide garden window, surrounded by a pale quartz worktop. Above it are two taps: an adjustable-height Quooker providing boiling water and a separate Franke tap supplying softened water.

Below the worktop, considerably more is happening.

The sink cabinet needed to accommodate the waste and associated plumbing, the water softener and the Quooker tank. There isn’t an unlimited amount of room inside a kitchen cabinet, so the position of every component mattered. Everything needed to fit, but it also needed to remain usable and accessible once the installation was complete.

The result is a cupboard that does quite a lot of work without advertising the fact. Close the doors and your attention goes back to the things you actually want to see: the quartz, the sink and the view into the garden.

The utility room renovation presented a different challenge. Its original design made extremely efficient use of the available space, which meant there was very little tolerance when everything came together on site. Small adjustments were needed so the cupboards operated properly while ensuring the main electrical fuse board remained accessible.

We also discovered a cabinet door that had arrived configured to open in the opposite direction to the one the room needed. Rather than allowing that to compromise the layout, we adapted the door, creating new hinge positions and neatly covering the redundant ones.

It’s barely noticeable now, which is exactly how it should be.

The finished utility has space for the washing machine and tumble dryer beneath the worktop, useful storage above and tall cabinetry for the hoover, ironing board and larger household items. Direct access from the garden also influenced how the room would be used, with a robust Franke sink providing somewhere to wash dirty hands before heading into the rest of the house. A socket positioned discreetly on the boiler housing helps keep the main wall clear.

There’s a lot packed into this room. It simply doesn’t feel like there is.

Back in the main kitchen, the unusual S-shaped flow gives the finished room much of its character. Tall larder cabinetry provides substantial, accessible storage while the main working areas remain relatively open.

The cabinetry combines dark wenge with a softer muted green-grey. The darker finish gives the tall bank of units depth, while the lighter cabinetry keeps the main working area feeling calm. A pale quartz worktop runs through the scheme and continues onto the breakfast-bar peninsula, creating an easy place to sit with a morning coffee or talk to someone while they’re cooking without turning the kitchen into one large block of cabinetry.

Above it, three sculptural pendant lights introduce ochre, blush and green into an otherwise restrained palette. They’re relatively small touches of colour, but they make a noticeable difference to the character of the room.

The cooking area itself is visually simple, with a black AEG induction hob and angled cooker hood against the pale worktop and splashback. The compatible appliances use AEG’s Hob2Hood® system, allowing the extraction to respond automatically while the hob is being used. It’s the sort of kitchen technology that makes sense because its purpose is straightforward: you cook and the extraction responds.

The same practical thinking continues throughout the kitchen. Drawers provide easily accessible storage, while the dishwasher and bins are integrated so the everyday workings of the room don’t dominate it. There’s plenty of storage, but the kitchen doesn’t feel as though every available wall has been filled simply because the space was there.

Storage needs to earn its place by making a kitchen easier to live with.

By the time this kitchen and utility renovation in Friars Cliff was complete, many of the original decisions remained exactly as they had been planned. Others needed small adjustments as the installation progressed.

That feels appropriate for this particular project.

We weren’t there to put our stamp on somebody else’s design. We were there to understand it, resolve the practical questions that arose during the installation and complete what had already been so carefully started.

There are details in the finished kitchen that nobody looking at the photographs would ever know required additional thought or problem-solving.

And that’s probably as it should be.

The kitchen that had been carefully planned on paper is now a real room, finished and being used as intended.

For this project, that feels like the right place to leave the story.
